Testing & Certification Just as a garden hose can lose its pressure due to the way it’s laid out or the quality of connections at each end, the performance of network cabling will also be reduced due to poor installation or termination. Plugging a network device (such as a PC) into a network and getting a connection does not mean that the infrastructure is working properly! Ethernet cable comprises of four pairs, and each pair has its own function, so whilst the pair responsible for providing network connectivity is working the loss of other pairs could mean the performance is reduced to just 10% of it’s potential. A simple wire-map test will show the loss of pairs due to bad termination, but to identify other issues (such as data loss or crosstalk) full certification is required. Fully testing and certifying a new network should show that it complies with the relevant standards (BS 6701, 50173 and 50174), and is something that most tender specifications require prior to handover. Older/existing networks can also be tested and certified, and would prove a valuable tool in identifying any issues that may have arisen over the course of time. - - - If you would like to discuss how we can help with your structured cabling/networking needs, or you wish to arrange a free, no-obligation survey/quote then please do not hesitate in contacting us. m: 07708 718120 t: 01502 476768 |
